At Haider Eye Care, one of our specialties is cornea transplants. We are one of the few practices in Louisivlle who offer these procedures. A cornea transplant is a procedure done to replace tissue in the cornea with donor tissue. The cornea is where light enters the eye and is the most important part of the eye to allow us to see clearly.

Cornea transplants are often done to restore vision of a person who has a damaged cornea. Some conditions that are treated with cornea transplants include:

  • Keratoconus, a condition that causes the cornea to become thinner and possibly change in shape

  • Cornea scarring, from injury or eye infection

  • Corneal swelling

  • Corneal perforation

  • Hereditary diseases such as Fuchs’ Endothelial Dystrophy, where the cells lining the cornea begin to deteriorate

To be eligible for a cornea transplant, a thorough eye exam is done to try and figure out underlying causes or conditions that could potentially cause complications after the transplant. We then take comprehensive measurements of the eye to determine the cornea transplant size needed. Unrelated eye problems are treated prior to surgery, like swelling or infection, to increase the chances of a successful surgery.

At Haider Eye Care, Dr. Haider performs 3 different types of cornea transplants. There are many factors taken into account to determine which transplant procedure will be performed, like cornea thickness.
